Major Activities and Achivements

LIVELIHOOD AND FOOD SECURITY PROGRAMS • Program’s activities include Backyard nutrition garden, promoting local livelihood activities, piggery, poultry, fishery, duckery, land and water resource development in 4 villages of Ukhrul district of Manipur. • Most prominent are spring water salt extraction and the fishery, the latter is where AWID has become synonymous, with the term ‘Khaichum’ (a traditional method of rearing fish in terraced paddy field) in the environment of the funding and nodal organization. The popularity of which has led to large scale promotion even in other districts. • Formed 4 (four) Self Help groups with minimum 15 members, three of which are engaged in activities related to Livelihood and Food Security while the fourth is engaged in handicrafts and skill development of traditional and cultural art. The groups are on the verge of self sustainment. DIVERSION BASED IRRIGATION • To achieve food security for small and marginal farmers of Manipur through Diversion Based Irrigation, • 3 (three) villages has been benefitted, 2 villages where small check-dams were constructed for irrigating agricultural lands with water shortage while the third for drinking water by diverting water from perennial source to village. SYSTEM OF RICE INTENSIFICATION, SRI Starting from 2009 till date, the method that involves scientific cultivation, promoting organic method, low investment but higher harvest in rice cultivation has been successfully implemented in 12 villages of the district, with a total of 600 cultivators effectively, and successfully benefitting from the method. WOMEN EMPOWERMENT, ENSURING WOMEN IN GOVERNANCE, PEACE AND SECURITY IN MANIPUR • Conducted a series of workshop on gender issues prevailing in micro and macro society. • Has been advocating active women’s participation in decision making and in governance thus empowering women at the grassroots levels. 1. SUPPORT TO WOMEN LEADERS, • Supported three women leaders running small organizations. • They are now able to organize and conduct meetings/workshops in their own areas • Through CASA, AWID has distributed winter quilts to children homes and boarding/hostels for girls belonging to below poverty lines 2. SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD FORUM-MANIPUR • Collected data on PDS from 100 households of Ukhrul District, identified the real beneficiaries who were not issued ration cards and put up complaint petitions to the concerned head of department for issuing them the same. • Attended a series of meetings and workshop conducted by SLF-M on PDS and National Food Security Act, in Imphal. 3. SELF-SUSTAINING ACTIVITIES. • Collect, process local organic seasonal fruits • Trained interested persons and SHGs • Aiming to produce good quality in a more hygienic way • Registered under FSS Act. 2006 and procured license. • Makes handicraft products: needle works, paper works, flower making, and trains SHGs members to enable them to generate their income 4. SUSTAINABLE ENERGY UNIT • Started during early 2014, mainly emphasized on renewable energy, the solar energy to remedy the erratic electricity supply • Provided solar lightings to the needy on instalments without any interests on the actual rate. About 50 households have benefitted from it.
