All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB) is a body of blind persons working for and with its blind brothers and sisters. It is made up of grass-roots and State-level Associations/Organizations working with the blind. It has 25 affiliates across the country. AICB is one of the three national affiliates of the World Blind Unionââ¬âthe sole representative body of the blind at the world level. The Confederation has now completed over 35 years of its existence. As we look back, we derive some satisfaction from the fact that we have traversed quite a long distanceââ¬âfrom a small rented office to its own premises housing a variety of services; from just one part-time employee to the present number of over 80 staff members; from a meager fund of just a few hundred rupees to the present budget of over 35 million rupees; from hardly any activity to over 20 projects and services.
The Confederationââ¬â¢s work has been receiving appreciation and commendation from various quarters. It has been adjudged the Best NGO in the disability sector for 2006 by the Government of India and presented the corresponding National Award by the then President of India on December 3, 2006. During the year 2009 and 2012, the Confederationââ¬â¢s Braille printing press was adjudged the best in the country and was awarded a Citation and cash Award of Rs. One Lakh each time on the occasion of 200th birth anniversary of Louis Braille in a grand function organized by the Government of India on 4th January, 2009 and on 6th February, 2013 respectively. Its Secretary General was honoured by the President of India on 31st March, 2014 by conferring Padma Shri Award for his outstanding service to blind community.
