Bal Sakha Assam Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements

Operational Districts: Dibrugarh

Operational States: ASSAM

AchieveMents: Child Protection Centers: The organization is also trying to develop the concept of child protection through community ownership in the society. The four Child Protection Centres has been actively functioning in Mohunbaree Tea Estate, Madarkhat Tea Estate, Wilton Champaknagar and Pohari Khonia, under the project of child protection with the support from CRY since July 2011. Though the programme is focused on children, but it also takes measures to build confidence and unity in masses. At first, the organization has started to empower three constituents of the community, i.e. children, youth groups and mothers. Regular meetings and interaction are conducted with children in CPCs. Activities like different sports, storytelling, educational and cultural activities, i.e., drawing, songs, dance etc. Different groups of youth, adolescent and mothers were formed and they organized meetings regularly. Awareness workshop on Right to Education Act 2009: The organization regularly organized workshops on RTE The workshops were well attended by teachers, members of SMC, guardians, PRI members, such as, ward members, village head etc. The booklet on RTE was published and distributed among community. Achievements from interventions: • Succeed in achieving 100 percent enrolments in Madarkhat T.E., Romai, Phutahula, Wilton Champaknagar. • Our awareness initiative has resulted in the formation of more active and vibrant SMC in Mohunbaree T.E. and Pohari Khonia. In-house capacity building training of volunteers from village and tea garden areas on health, education and other key issues held time to time in the office of the organization. Awareness workshops on health issues of adolescent girls: The health status of the children of tea gardens and rural areas are not satisfactory. High rate of malnutrition, anemia, high prevalence of common and water borne diseases are common. The local stakeholders, like, ANM, ASHAs, AWW, local leaders of ACMS and others likeminded people from the area also participated in these meetings. Playing activities, nutrition, personal hygiene, menstrual hygiene, adverse outcome of early marriage and teenage pregnancy, adverse outcome of tobacco use, benefits of regular exercise discussion on different health and education issues, discussion of different case studies and how to solve the problems, protection issues etc. were discussed in these meetings.
