AchieveMents: Central India Institute of Medical Sciences (CIIMS), Nagpur, is a registered society (Maharashtra/215/83) and a Public Charitable Trust (F-3592) a dream 1966 of Dr. G.M. Taori, the founder Director, came true in July 1984. It is a medical research institute with a medical service wing (hospital) as part of infrastructure for research. At present it is a 114 bedded hospital cum basic life sciences research center. Research Centre has been recognized as a Research Institute by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India since its inception. The major aim was to undertake research activity in clinical and basic sciences related to human illness. For the same purpose, CIIMS established a Research centre in 2000. CIIMS has well well-equipped Research centre, with all the modern amenities including microbiology lab, Cell culture and immunological and proteomics lab and animal house facility etc.
Research Centre has elaborated 17 years research experience in the field of various infectious diseases like tuberculosis, including tuberculous meningitis, HIV, Neuroinfections, Chikungunya, Viral infections of CNS like HSV, CMV, Chandipura etc. and noninfectious disorders stroke and thrombosis. Research Centre, has developed around 20 advanced molecular and immunological methods for rapid and early diagnosis of bacterial and viral neuroinfections and identified novel prognostic marker for stroke. Published 100 publications related to various aspects of disease including diagnosis, pathogenesis, vaccine development, and new biomarkers for various diseases. More than 150 papers have been presented in different National and International Conferences. Adhoc research grants have been sanctioned for eleven of our research projects, five by Department of Biotechnology, two by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, two by Indian Council of Medical Research, one by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and one by Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Etc. The Institute has been granted two Indian patents for the development of diagnostic kits, one for the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis and second for the diagnosis of extra CNS tuberculosis infection. A complete specification for a third Indian patent for the development of a thrombolytic composition using an herbal preparation for the lysis of human blood clot has been submitted.
Research Centre has also been recognized for the Ph.D. program in Biochemistry and Microbiology in Science Faculty by RTM, Nagpur University and in Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Medical Biotechnology in Medicine faculty by Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, Nagpur. Total thirteen research scholars have already been awarded their Ph.D Degree (Eight by RTM Nagpur University and Five by Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University) in different subjects such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology and Medical Biotechnology.
Research Centre, CIIMS time to time also conduct hands on training workshops in Immunological, Molecular and Animal Cell Cultural techniques for graduate and postgraduate students, researchers and teachers in life sciences and provide research services to research scholar in and around the Nagpur. Research Centre has collaborated with more than 50 National and International Institutions.
