Jal Seva Charitable Foundation Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements
Operational Districts: South
Operational States: DELHI
AchieveMents: The environment in the country has continued to be positive to the sanitation sector. Key developments being the Ministry of Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation reviving discussions on improving the hygiene strategy and embedding hygiene indicators within the sanitation programme, WAI has been a key partner in the consultative processes.WAIââ¬â¢s interventions had sharpened to influence the processes of planning, demand generation and monitoring. The support extended to the government included, building a trained cadre base at all levels, mobilising people to trigger demand and sustain change, capacity building of key functionaries, studies and assessment to inform the government of ground realities, and support in developing WASH training programmes and modules. At the end of the year, 12 of our districts are among the top five performing districts under rural sanitation, in their respective states. In partnership and collaboration with governments, participatory assessments were carried out in seven states on WASH in schools, WASH in health care centres, and quality and usage of toilets constructed under the sanitation programme.Through our community mobilisation we have reached 703.925 (+15% of plan) people with access to water, 1,123,180 (+0.1% of plan) people with access to sanitation and 1,887,253 (+28% of plan) people with hygiene education. During the year, we have trained 10,730 Local Government Members, 26,137 Governments frontline workers, 7,371 schoolteachers, 5,601 masons and 15,566 Government officials. At a national and state level, WAI has been consistent in leading and contributing to collaboration with Governments and other key actors including networks and coalitions. India Sanitation Coalition (ISC) was launched with a purpose to bring diverse organizations on a common platform to support sanitation in India.WAI in alliance with civil society networks and movements have regularly brought out assessments and analysis of the performance of the WASH sector under the new Government, budget analysis and status reports WASH access in varied contexts. WAI has led campaigns on WASH as integral to childrenââ¬â¢s right to education, rights of the homeless to WASH, the role of youth in development and mobilising support for Goal 6 of the Global Goals. The key networks that we engaged include Wada Na Todo Abhiyan (WNTA), Right to Education (RTE) Forum, Youth Ki Awaaz, Video Volunteers, Dalits and Tribal Rights Movements and National Forum for Housing Rights, among others. Our media engagement and reach recorded a significant growth, triggering wider attention and discourse on key issues, like Goal 6 of SDG, ââ¬Ëand global days on Toilet, Handwashing and World Water Day. On the eve of first anniversary of ââ¬ÅClean India Missionââ¬Â the film ââ¬ÅAcross the Tracksââ¬Â developed by WAUK on our work in Kanpur (supported by HSBC), was telecast on Doordarshan (DD National) which has a pan India viewership.WAIââ¬â¢s largest handwashing campaign organised as a joint initiative with the Government of Madhya Pradesh on Global Handwashing Day 2014 is now officially recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Menstrual hygiene communication resources developed by WAI in English and five Indian languages have been well received by Government Programmes and in particular, it has reached out to all frontline workers in four districts of Madhya Pradesh. WAI supported central ministries in developing Ad films on water conservation and sanitation, which are regularly telecast in the national channels. Indian Ocean music concert on World Toilet day was first of its kind and generated greater visibility to WAI and WASH. Our Resource Mobilisation strategy and plan have been approved as part of business plan. Long-term strategic partnerships are in pipeline, likely to be confirmed early next year. The country strategy has been approved by the JalSeva board and WaterAid UK. The five-year operational plans have been rolled out. Our current staff strength is 59, with all key positions filled. We have utilised INR 524 million (95% of budget). JalSeva has obtained the registration under FCRA, and on 31st of March, the organisation has completely transited to the new entity with all the staff, partnerships and Madhya Pradesh on Global Handwashing Day 2014 is now officially recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
