AchieveMents: Nilgiri Leprosy Eradication Scheme (NILES) was established in 1991 as a direct initiative of GLRA India and was registered under society registration act. This was a Leprosy SET project from 1991 to 2006 and from 2006 it started functioning as a TB Treatment Unit till 2011 in Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu. From 2011, the project shifted its area of operation to Coimbatore district and started disability prevention services among leprosy affected persons.
Sustainable Prevention of Disability (SpoD) project is being implemented from February 2012, after obtaining necessary permission from the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Govt. of Tamil Nadu (RC NO 87/NGO-permission/SH.5/2011 dated 24/09/2011) with the financial support from German Leprosy and TB Relief Association (GLRA), India.
The overall objective of the NILES-SPoD Project is to ensure that quality Disability Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation (DPMR) services as per guidelines of Govt. of India are provided through an integrated approach with the support of the general healthcare system. The Project envisages that good quality prevention of disability (POD) services is available in all Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and urban health posts (UHPs) and a system of sustained supervision of POD care and quality programme management is established in the district.
The services are rendered for leprosy affected persons in collaboration with the District Leprosy Office, Coimbatore district after conducting sensitization programmes for Government health staff on disability prevention and care.
NILES work for benefit of the leprosy affected people by providing quality disability care through Govt. health system in all over Coimbatore district
