AchieveMents: Sanchetana beginning from a small clinic in an Ahmedabad slum-Sanchetana has evolved as a human rights body that rallies the urban poor for the common cause of social justice-education-gender equity- women empowerment and secularism-Sanchetana calls for social justice in health so as to transform the nature and practice of state accountability in ensuring adequate conditions where all persons irrespective of their class caste or age can be healthy. The urban slum dwellers of Ahmedabad city who are victims of economic stress and impoverishment- exploitation-communal violence and are subjected to the denial of their rights through various modes of oppression and segregation-Raising awareness levels among the ill informed to facilitate the acceptance of healthy behaviors-Building and strengthening community organization to call on collective action-Supporting peoples initiatives to ensure peoples participation in decision-making-Initiating and joining campaigns and movements to protect human rights-Demanding the establishment of people-centric public health systems to guarantee Right to Health Care-Training of health activists to enhance their skills in effectively reaching out to the communities-Developing informative materials to increase the awareness levels-Collecting and disseminating relevant information to bring constructive change-Analyzing the multi-farious causes of human rights violations to promote and protect human dignity-Through multi-pronged mainstream, as well as alternative communication mediums like Street-plays Exhibitions (Community level City level) Folk Songs-Dance-Campaigns-Puppet-shows-Television shows-Games-Workshops-Training programs-Celebration of festivals-Institutionalized days etc-Women Health Through Reproductive Health Program efforts are made to build an understanding among men and women to see women reproductive and sexual rights as human rights-whereby she has ability to make decisions regarding her reproduction and sexuality and is in a position to implement those decisions-Adolescent Health-Adolescents are highly vulnerable to changes in social conditions and the socio-cultural context in which adolescent development takes place has an overwhelming impact on their health. Our Adolescent Health Program seeks to enhance the capacities of adolescents so that they are in a position to take wiser decisions for their future and achieve self-respect and sense of worth.
