AchieveMents: Shantha Jeeva Jyothi [SJJ] was established as a non-government voluntary organization in 1988 by professional social workers and medical personnel. It aims to improve the overall status of socially and economically marginalized communities like people affected by leprosy, children, women, and youths and differently abled. The government of Karnataka enthusiastically allocated to SJJ a large area with the population of in 39 wards of Bangalore to undertake leprosy control works and Bangalore City Corporation offered an unutilized Health Center building to SJJ for its activities. Major activities include Elimination of leprosy as per the National Leprosy Eradication Programme, Govt. of India, Care and protection of children, Preventive and curative community health, Community based rehabilitation of people with disability and Socio-economic empowerment of marginalized women. Areas of intervention under leprosy and disability include awareness raising, case detection, treatment, prevention and management of disability and community based rehabilitation. Till date 3150 persons identified with leprosy cured of the disease. SJJ has also been promoting mother and child health through sensitization on preventive and curative health care, environmental sanitation by which around 1800 children and women benefited annually SJJ has been involved in care, protection and development of children in need of care and protection in Ramanagara district. SJJ promotes raising awareness on child rights, identification and intervention of victims of child right violations, networking and collaborating with the convergent programmes and organizations of the government and civil society. We work by organizing sensitization programmes in schools, communities, training and forming Child Rights Clubs, Task Force consisted of different stakeholders. It is entrusted as District Missing Children Bureau by the Government of Karnataka in 2010 to identify missing and unaccompanied children and re-unite them with their families and appointed as District CHILDLINE ââ¬â 1098 Collaborative Partner by the CIF-Government of India in 2016 for providing emergency interventions to children in need of care and protection in Ramanagara district of Karnataka. SJJ is also working to facilitate community based rehabilitation of people with disability [PWD]. One track addresses the empowerment of persons with disability through sensitization, referral, access to education and livelihood activities and on the other simultaneously capacitating the organizations of people with leprosy and disability to works towards breaking down the barriers causing their exclusion and marginalization. Women empowerment interventions seek to reduce social and economic marginalization among rural communities in Ramanagara district and in different slums of Bangalore through the processes of awareness building, forming SHGs, accessing to information, credit and resources, through participatory training The project enabling them to gain knowledge and skills to organize and assert themselves, have control over the resources, developing a strong ownership and creativity in solving problems. SJJ worked with the Bangalore City Corporation and the W.H.O. in an action research. Aims were to establish social determinants affecting Healthy Urbanization and suggesting development targets to civic agencies. The research brought out evidence based causes behind causes of deterioration of general health of people due to unsafe water and led agencies to initiate appropriate actions.
