AchieveMents: Shanti Bhavan is a unique and free residential school of excellence in Tamil Nadu for children from extremely poor backgrounds. Their parents are rag pickers, sewage workers, quarry labourers, house maids and without intervention they will go on to those same careers trapped in a cycle of poverty reinforced by barriers of class, education and geography. Every year we take twelve girls and twelve boys at the age of four for admisssion and our total enrollment is three hundred and fifty students. The Shanti Bhavan Educational Trust offers free high quality education for its students both at its residential school and subsequently at top tier college. we follow the ICSE and ISC curriculum a challenging set of quidelines and examinations usually reserved for elite preparatory schools. Our Students are given the skills and education to compete and excel at the very highest of levels. Shanti Bhavan is more than a school. It is a unique approach for educating poor children. Our commitment goes beyond education. In addition to their academics our children are treated to a program of complete holistic care carefully structured to teach them about arts,sports,leadership and world cultures. we provide complete medical and residential services to each child offering them the kind of environment they need to flourish. In total this is a seventeen to nineteen years of intense intervention per child from age four to twenty three. Our model has shown that by providing children with the tools to succeed at a very high level and by instilling in them the values of civic engagement that they then become change makers themselves going on to help their families,communities and other children in need. It takes just that one generation to break the cycle of poverty for these families. No other model of educational intervention commits the same level of long term and quality investment in the lives of children or holds more promise for their futures and those of their families. All children in the first nine batches of tenth graders passed ICSE examination in first class with majority of them getting distinctions. The seven batches that have graduated from twelfth grade in the ISC examination have also received first class and distinction. These children are studying in colleges of excellence including National law school Bangalore and Kolkata, Christ College, Mount Carmel College, Reva Univeristy, BMS Institute of Technology. Four batches of our students who graduated with Bachelor Degrees are working in multinational companies such as Goldman Sachs, Capgemini, Mercedes Benz, Deloitte, Infosys, Amazon, Yahoo, ANZ Grindlays etc.
