AchieveMents: Shelter for Her Empowerment is formed by a group of professional, qualified social workers. They have keen interest in social work and they are committed to uplift women. They had understood gender inequality in society. Though legal system is trying hard to introduce various legal provisions to eradicate woes of women, yet women themselves do not know about the legal weapons they have for their safeguard.
Shelter for Her Empowerment detect that awareness is power. The very name of the society refers that it is for the strength and power of women. Therefore, the society aims to educate the women and instil knowledge in to them.
SHE is earnest in educating the women. The veteran teachers are toiling hard for that purpose. Slum girls and all the girls of under privilege class of society are being regularly taught. More than two hundred girls have attended our classes. English, Mathematics, Bengali and History taught. We take special care to prepare girls for career oriented course. We trained them in English conversation, computer. It has developed their communication skill. This skill is so successfully developed that already some girls have got jobs. Our girls already had trained the Potuas of Midnapore in spoken English. With the help of SHE girls, a section of Potuas are communicating in English with foreigner customers and therefore their business has shot up.
SHE has assisted Girls to take up nursing training. These girls are already in employment.
SHE has been performing street theatres for last five years in various places including interior slums and district. Street drama is a medium to reach out the folk in the easiest way. Our theaters deal with the social vices and their legal riddance. Dowry system, 498A, Bigamy, Female foetcide, Minor marriage etc. are few examples. Our street theatres are easily understandable, full of fun and are readily acceptable. Marginalized SHE girls are performing in the drama.
Reality in their family gets expression in theatrical acts. A girl, victim of bigamy, acts in the drama. It is interesting.
SHE is hugely keen to spread awareness in women. Knowledge is power.
Under the influence of our street theatres, the poverty struck and socially handicapped women folk wake up to resist social vices. They protested to dowry or to surrender to social injustices and are ready to snatch their rights. We have a long list of alike case history.
SHE is also a legal counseling centre. It looks after family, properly and marital problem.
We have handled approximately 129 cases.
On 19th March 2012 SHE has successfully organised a programme on Tagoreââ¬â¢s Short Stories-a search for gender equality through a combination of lectures, drama, dance and song performance at Madhusudan Manch for the target audience of about 350 mostly women. The programme was highly appreciated by print and TV media. This programme was sponsored by govt. of India under TCGS to commemorate 150 years of Tagore.
