It is a non-government research and training center in the not for profit domain. The center was registered in 1990 and started functioning in 1995 initially through its head quarter in Kolkata and now also through the Regional Center at Delhi. It is recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO).The overall strategy of the center is to identify important research questions, interventions, or technologies and then implement the research findings through partnership, networking with public and non-government institutions.
The achievements of the center over the years are highlighted below:
ââ¬Â¢Demonstrated the beneficial effect of zinc as adjunct treatment of pneumonia in infants.
ââ¬Â¢Demonstrated the role of sick newborn units at district hospitals and peripheral health outfits in reducing NMR & IMR, as an alternative complimentary approach. Now known as Purulia Model of sick newborn care, it is being replicated in several states in India and in Bangladesh and Nepal. In a recent book, ââ¬ÅGood Practices Resource Bookââ¬Â published by Planning Commission and UNDP India, Purulia Model is described in a chapter entitled, ââ¬ÅHub and Spoke, Approach for Strengthening Facilities for Neonatal Careââ¬Â 2009; pp:37-41.
ââ¬Â¢Developed a killed oral Shigella vaccine that showed very high protection in disease models of shigellosis in animals
ââ¬Â¢Demonstrated the role of H. pylori infection in anemia in children and its adverse effect on response to treatment with iron
ââ¬Â¢Developed new equations for calculating body fat and fat free mass based on skin-fold thickness and mid-arm circumference in preschool children for field use.
ââ¬Â¢Became a partner in the development of a live oral cholera vaccine supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India
ââ¬Â¢Demonstrated the role of indoor air pollution from polluting cooking fuels as a risk factor for pneumonia in infants and children.
ââ¬Â¢Established a disease model of shigellosis in rabbits for its usefulness in vaccine protection studies
ââ¬Â¢Established an innovative human volunteer study set up for testing enteric vaccines at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Kolkata
ââ¬Â¢Demonstrated the adverse effect of antimicrobial treatment of putative reproductive tract infection of pregnant women on the mothers and babies.
ââ¬Â¢Showed that Folic Acid protects against enteric bacterial translocation in an animal model.
ââ¬Â¢Created an organization named ââ¬ËSPARSHAââ¬â¢ run by people with HIV/AIDS and their friends.
ââ¬Â¢Established a new model of human resources for Sick Newborn Care at fixed facilities named ââ¬ÅNewborn Aidesââ¬Â.
ââ¬Â¢The centre over the year has published 83 research papers largely in peer reviewed international journals.
ââ¬Â¢The center has trained 5 students for Ph.D degree; two completed under a collaborating Scientist at NICED and two directly from the Center; one is now completing the Ph.D. thesis. Three of them are now doing Post Doctoral Fellowship in US Universities
ââ¬Â¢The Centre trained a large number of doctors on ââ¬ÅComputerized Data Management & Statistical Analysisââ¬Â using a computer program EPI Info, developed by WHO (Geneva) and CDC Atlanta (USA).
