AchieveMents: Profile of SOS Childrens villages of India SOS Childrens Villages of India is an independent non-governmental social development organization, committed to the care of children in need. SOS Childrens Villages has pioneered the concept of family based child care and our work primarily focuses on children who have lost their families and those children who are at the risk of abandonment and social neglect. The SOS Children’s Villages of India was set up in 1964 and today we are a strong family of 31 Childrens Villages across the country providing family based care to more than 6000 children. Apart from that 122 facilities like Social Centres, Medical Centres, Kindergartens and Vocational Training Centres, being managed by SOS Childrens Villages of India. Apart from this, the SOS Tibetan Organisations manage numerous other facilities. Through family strengthening programme more than 15,000 children are supported. The SOS Childrens Villages of India was registered as a society on March 12, 1964 under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. A Society registered under the above Act has its own Constitution and is a legal entity entitled to carry out welfare activities within rules applicable in the various States of the country. The constitution of SOS Childrens Villages of India provides that its management is vested in the Board of Directors. NATIONAL OFFICE National Office headed by National Director Co-ordinates the projects across India is located at A – 7, Nizamuddin West, New Delhi – 110013 Activities of the Organisation The SOS Childrens village works with different forms of family • Families of Origin:- where the child who is at the risk of losing parental care can stay with his/her family, which is supported to be able to effectively protect and care from him/her • SOS family: Where the child who has lost parental care can develop in a caring family environment, which is organised by the SOS Children’s Village. The SOS mother leads the SOS family and is directly responsible for the care and development of each child. • Other forms of family based care: Where the child who has lost parental care can develop in a caring family environment other than in an SOS family. Within the programme, concrete responses are made through three types of interventions. 1) Direct essential Services: Which are made available to fulfil the child’s survival, protection, development and participation rights. 2) Capacity building: To support care givers, families, communities and other duty bearers and service providers to develop the attitudes, knowledge, kills, resources, systems and structures to protect and care for the child. 3) Advocacy: Aim to improve overall framework conditions for children of our target group. Family Based Care Each SOS Children’s Village comprises of 15 -20 homes where 8-10 children in different age groups are growing up in a SOS family home under the care of a SOS Mother. We train the care givers before placing them in family homes and organize refresher programs on child care for them at regular intervals. To provide guidance and support to the children we also have professional lady councillors for the girls and a male councillor for the boys who advice them in various aspects related to life skill, education and vocational needs. The SOS mother builds a close relationship with every child entrusted to her, and provides the security, love and stability that each child needs. Our first generation children have grown and are married and settled with their families. We have children who are in the professions like medicals, paramedical, nursing, engineering, teaching, hotel & hospitality industry, physical education, business administration, and in small business ventures. More than 2000 children are leading independent and settled lives. In many States like Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Assam the State Government has granted land free of premium to SOS –India for the purpose of building our Children’s Villages and taking care of children in a ‘Family environment’. Our Youth program aims to provide Youth to become mentally mature, economically self sufficient, socially productive and law abiding citizen so that they are ultimately able to find their respective place in the society. It offers learning and growth opportunities and supports the youth to develop the attitudes, behaviour, confidence and skill needed to take responsibility for building their own futures and to become self-supporting and contributing member of society. Objectives of the Youth programmes are 1) Preparing the Youth as a person with Self-confidence, emotional stability, good values, culturally deep rooted, personality, self- esteem, good health 2) Assist Youth to become self-sufficient with educational and vocational training, work experience and suitable job placement. 3) Helping Youth to integrate in society by providing better communication, community participation, learning to manage stress, behaving better in group and knowing social and legal responsibility. The quality standards of the youth programmes developed are monitored and evaluated on regular interval. Youth above the age of 13 years live in separate accommodation the Youth House under the guidance of Co-worker and manage the functioning of it on their own. There is one Youth co-worker for every 15 youths who provides direction and counselling to the young boys in their pursuit of self reliance. The youth co-worker maintains for each youth in his charge an individual file, observation file and development plan for further career building. This ensures an individual development planning process for each individual child. The youth are engaged in running the youth house. Family strengthening Programme(FSP) The purpose of our Family Strengthening Programme (FSP) is to enable children who are at risk of losing the acre of their family to grow within a caring family environment. We work directly with the families and communities to empower them to effectively protect and care for their children, in cooperation with local authorities and other service providers. The programme is made up of package of services to support families and communities to assume their responsibility to protect and care for their children. The packages of services is designed to 1. Ensure that children have access to essential services required fulfilling their survival, development, and protection and participation rights. This includes educational, nutrition, health and psycho-social support; improvements of living conditions, as well as support to establish the child’s identity. 2. Support families to build their capacity to protect and care for their children. This includes supporting care-givers to develop their parenting knowledge and skills; to secure a stable source of resources (e.g. income and food production) to provide for their children’s development needs now and in the future: and to manage their resources efficiently. These services reach children through their families. 3. Strengthen support services for vulnerable children and their families within the community. In particular, support is given to community members (from target group, relevant service-providers or other concerned members of the community to self-organise so that they are able to develop and sustain their own responses to the needs of vulnerable children and their families. Through Self help group (SHG) we enhance the capacity of the families and facilitate the sustainable group or individual livelihood activities.. Through this program we reach out to 15000 children in 31 different locations across the country. . We also have community projects like Kindergartens, Hermann Gmeiner Schools, Social, Medical and Vocational Training Centres, Nursing School which are spread across the country caters the need of the children of disadvantaged and marginal section of the society. . We work in the spirit of the United Nation Convention on the rights of the Child. SOS Children’s Villages of India is a member of the world wide SOS family working in 132 countries with SOS-Kinderdorf International as the umbrella organization.
