Urban Health Resource Centre Key Issues and Operational Areas, Major Activiities & Achivements
Operational Districts: North East,Indore,Meerut, Agra
Operational States: DELHI, MADHYA PRADESH, UTTAR PRADESH
AchieveMents: Urban Health Resource Centre (UHRC), established in 2005, implements demonstration health programs in diverse cities (Indore, Agra, North-East Delhi) such that these may be adapted, replicated and,or up-scaled by government and non-governmental agencies. These demonstration programs seek to assess different strategies of empowering urban poor women and communities, improving health and nutrition of this segment and facilitate access to services and entitlements. These programmes help better understand which strategies are more effective and feasible, and more importantly the how-to of implementing these strategies. The programmes have evolved over time in response to the needs, context and lessons learnt. The focus is on facilitating access of services and entitlements to the vulnerable, socially backward sections of society and synergizing the efforts of key stakeholders. to strengthen the social fabric in slums and address gender inequity, there is a concerted effort towards empowering slum-level women groups and their federations, developing community-based health and development funds and building capacity of slum women to enable them take charge of processes that affect their health, nutrition and wellbeing. These demonstration programmes have provided valuable learnings on the operational aspects of training and utilizing services of health volunteers in slums involving NGOs in social mobilization, service delivery, and training women groups to manage health funds. These cogent lessons have been instrumental in guiding policy directions and shaping governmental and non-governmental programs in other cities. Lessons have been documented and are available on www.uhrc.in Research undertaken by UHRC and its publications inform policy development and urban health programming approaches of the government and other stakeholders. UHRC undertakes primary quantitative and qualitative research as well as secondary-research including re-analysis of large data sets such as NFHS. Reports of various studies, research papers and data sheets describing health, nutrition and access disparities in urban areas are available on the organization website. UHRC website is a service for programmers and academia. The website has extensive information on urban health issues and challenges and serves as a ready reference on urban health. The website link has been placed on other relevant information portals to increase visibility of the issue and data. UHRC provides technical support on urban health, nutrition and related issues to National, State, and District Governments, urban local bodies and NGOs. It works with governments, academic and research organizations and professional associations for enhanced attention and resources for improving health and well-being of the urban poor. UHRCeteam members represented UHRC at National Task Force to Advise "National Rural Health Mission on Strategies for Urban Health Care" (2005-06). The Task force report acknowledges role of UHRC. UHRC is a member of State Health Society of Government of Delhi. UHRC team member represents the organization and holds responsible position at the International Society of Urban Health. UHRC team member also represented UHRC at expert-group consultation convened by WHO on Urban Health Metrics at WHO Kobe Centre, Japan in February 2011, at Roundtable for Urban Living Environment Research (RULER) (Rockfeller Foundation) during 2010 -2011 and other such forums.
